Sonoma Public Works announced the city will test a fully-electric street sweeper while the department’s usual diesel-powered street sweeper is experiencing mechanical issues. The unit was loaned to the city by Municipal Maintenance Equipment.
As of Oct. 31, Sonoma’s street sweeping schedule resumed, with no anticipated interruptions to operations.

Public works is awaiting a part needed to repair the diesel-powered unit, which began experiencing mechanical issues a week ago. With the temporary use of a fully-electric unit, the street department can evaluate the new technology’s performance.
“The electric sweeper is a Demo model on loan from Municipal Maintenance Equipment. It’s the company that the City purchased our existing street sweeper from, that’s currently undergoing repairs,” Sonoma City Public Information Officer Sarah Tracy said.
The city’s street department ensures storm water flowing into Sonoma’s creeks and bays remains clean. Keeping streets clean is a joint effort that benefits the community and local environment.
The sweeper unit helps prevent debris from clogging or flowing through the city’s storm drain system.
Sonoma encourages the community to minimize debris on the streets and gutters by raking leaves and putting them in yard waste containers. Residents should not blow debris into the street or gutter to avoid clogging and polluting waterways.
